The Chairman, Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mr. Emmanuel Bamigboye, on Friday read riot act to residents who engaged in indiscriminate disposal of refuse.

Bamgboye declared that indiscriminate dumping of refuse was an offence when he led a team of council officials on environmental sanitation tour.

The council boss, who frowned at flagrant disregard to environmental laws, called on residents to ensure strict compliance to cleanliness in their domain, in line with the Cleaner Lagos Initiative of the Lagos State Government.

He said: “We would not treat those who make our environment dirty with kid’s glove again. We have zero tolerance to all forms of indiscriminate disposal of refuse in our local government.

“It is prohibited for any person to dump waste anyhow. We have been enlightening the people and provided necessary facilities to prevent this.

“We want to appeal to our people to embrace the culture of cleanliness for healthy environment for our sake and the sake of our children.”

According to him, such sanitation tour becomes necessary due to the tonnes of waste generated by people of the community during the yuletide, saying the bulk of the waste is not properly disposed.

“We made this tour a daily, weekly and monthly exercise because our priority was to ensure clean Mushin: we have been getting good feedback on phone calls.

“We have a synergy with the state policy of Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode because we are part of it. A healthy nation translates to a wealthy nation.”

The chairman, who lauded the Clean Lagos Initiative, said it would record great feat in short time. Bamigboye, who noted that the tour was the second phase of the routine exercise in January, said that the council was determined to ensure cleanliness all around the area.

The team visited Fatai Atere, Ladipo, Iyana Itire, Itire Ijesha road, Lawanson, Mushin and Isolo road, among other areas not captured in the first phase of the exercise.
